Meet DJ Pho: the Ghanaian DJ Breathing Life into Events

In an era where the business of music continues to form an integral part of pop culture, the work of professionals who handle diverse roles in this space is highly appreciated.

In Ghana, and like many parts of the globe, the work of DJs, cannot be overemphasized, as they are regarded the lifeline to the success of various events.

DJ Pho (formerly DJ Foe), a Ghanaian multiple award-winning disc jockey with over a decade’s experience in the profession, is one of the few who mans this effortlessly.

Real name Kwaku Afriyie Boateng, his works remain an indelible one in the industry and serve as an inspiration to his peers and upcoming ones. His depth of knowledge in music, selections, passion, uniqueness, technical and communication skills, set him apart from others.

His feat in disc jockeying dates back to his senior high school days at Kumasi Academy, where he developed the love for mixing songs for entertainment on campus.

DJ Pho’s works span across radio, night clubs/pubs, weddings, and many social functions in, and outside the country.

His professional journey began in 2008 – he worked with the then Vibe 91.9 FM, Great 91.3 (now Class FM), Radio Emashie 105.1 FM, and now Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM (all in Accra, Ghana).

In December 2016, he changed his name from DJ Foe to DJ Pho (pronounced /foo/), which is the initials for “Play Hits Only”.

The CEO of Spicy Fingerz Entertainment’s work is inspired by revered DJs like DJ Black, DJ Khaled, Funkmaster Flex, DJ Jazzy Jeff, and DJ Def Jam.

He has been the resident DJ for Ghana’s prestigious radio and television personalities award, RTP Awards, since its inception.

The radio DJ and host currently anchors the Total Request Live, Club 87, and Listener’s Choice on Accra-based Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM.

DJ Pho has played at many corporate and social events, for revered personalities and brands/entities in the country including the Otumfuo @ 20 Anniversary Celebration Dinner, where he earned the moniker “The Royal DJ”.

Others are Parliament of Ghana, Ghana DJ Awards, Golden Movie Awards, TV3 Music Music, Zenith Bank, Tigo Ghana, Samsung Ghana, OmniBank Ghana, Nestle Ghana, StarLife Assurance, and Bosch Ghana.

He released his first mixtape ‘Listen and Name the Mix Vol.1’ in September 2013, before separately releasing the ‘Play Hits Only Vol. 1, 2, and 3’ following a change in the spelling of his stage name.

DJ Pho has earned nominations at the prestigious Ghana DJ Awards (2014, 2016, 2017, 2020, 2021, and 2023), across multiple categories including Hiplife DJ of the Year, Event DJ of the Year, and Mobile DJ of the Year. He also earned a nomination at the 2018 Ghana Event Awards.

He has three (3) professional award wins to his credit and these include the Best Mobile DJ (2014 Ghana DJ Awards), Event DJ of the Year (2020 Ghana DJ Awards), and Best Mobile DJ (2023 Ghana DJ Awards).
