Pope Benedict XVI Dies at 95

Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI has been confirmed dead at the age of 95.

The former supreme pontiff or Head of the Catholic Church died at exactly 9.34am on Saturday, December 31, 2022.

The Vatican announced this with the words “Pope Benedict XVI’s death occurred at his residence in the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery, Vatican.

“With sorrow I inform you that the Pope Emeritus, Benedict XVI, passed away today at 9:34 in the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery in the Vatican. Further information will be provided as soon as possible.”

The body of the Pope will be laid in Saint Peter’s Basilica on Monday, January 3, 2023 for the faithful to file pass and bid farewell.

Pope Francis will preside over funeral of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI which will be held on Wednesday, January 5, 2023 from 9.30 CET.

He assumed the papacy on 19th April 2005, following the death of Pope John Paul II. He resigned on 28th February 2013 as a result of his advanced age becoming the first Pope to resign since Gregory XII in 1415.

He was succeeded by Pope Francis.
