Highlife music legend Amakye Dede has noted the genre has been usurped by musicians from Nigeria.
He has however, advised Ghanaian acts to work on authentic Ghanaian music, in order to redeem the glory.
The “Iron Boy” made this known in a recent interview with Graphic Showbiz.
He noted that “the only authentic music we have is Highlife but unfortunately it is only a few young musicians who are doing pure Highlife. We have allowed the Nigerians to take that from us and it is not so good for the future of our industry.”
“The likes of Kuami Eugene are doing great when it comes to Highlife music but I wish more young artistes were taking up the genre,” he added.
According to highlife musician, Ghanaians should not allow any other person or country to take highlife music away from where it originated from.
“We can tell our own stories through Highlife and that is what I mostly do on my songs. I try as much as people to make sure Ghanaians can relate to my songs,” he said.
Highlife music has been the bedrock of many African music genres in recent times. The most notable one is afrobeats which is widely performed by musicians from Nigeria.
