The Heritage Month 2025 edition has been launched in Accra by the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) ahead of the very educative and action-packed experiences.
This ushers in a month-long activities that honours our shared values from the past to the future, while drumming home the need to embrace the rich Ghanaian culture.
Speaking at the press launch on Monday morning, the CEO of GTA Mrs. Marilyn Maame Efua Hoaudjeto encouraged all to visit the numerous tourist sites across the sixteen (16) regions of Ghana.
“From our historical sites and attractions, to the floral and fauna, we therefore encourage Ghanaians to visit these unique places of interest, to connect with nature, experience leisure and derive needed health benefit associated accordingly. It is important to know that all the 16 regions of Ghana have unique attractions i.e. food, music, dance, customs, traditions and so on,” she stated.
She added that “I wish to urge tourism enterprises such as hotels, restaurants, pubs, guest houses night clubs to ensure that our local foods and drinks are on display in their varieties as part of their menu or snack. Tour guides are encouraged to also promote and educate people on our culture and heritage. The drinking bars, pubs, and night clubs are encouraged to play Ghanaian music to promote our cherished Ghanaian music.”
She also reiterated the need to “wear Ghana especially in this month, in all forms, to boost our local textile industry and create more income for our numerous sales and local prints.”
The Deputy CEO of GTA Mr. Gilbert Abeiku Aggrey popularly known as Abeiku Santana who delivered the opening remarks outlined some of the activities earmarked for this year’s celebration.
These include the ‘Made in Ghana Rave’ on 6th March at Diamond Hills in Kwadaso, ‘Akwaaba Festival’ from March 6th to 8th at the National Theatre, ‘Taste 68 Food Fair’ which begins on 14th March at Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park as well as the ‘Gobe Festival’ on 22nd March at the Legon City Mall.
The Director of Diaspora Affairs at the Office of the President, Mr. Kofi Okyere-Darko urged Ghanaians living abroad to inculcate Ghanaian values in their children which calling for at least 70% local music this month.
“We are also entreating families in the Diaspora to tell known tales about Ghana i.e. second and third generation Ghanaians in the Diaspora as well as persons who are aspiring to become Ghanaians; this is an opportunity to educate them more into what happens in the country. For this Month of March lets focus on GH music, I would entreat us to do at least 70% Ghanaian music. I think we have enough music in our collections to keep us going for an entire month,” he stated.
The Director of The Black Stars Experience, Mr. Rex Owusu Marfo aka Rex Omar noted that “this year’s Heritage Month is not just a celebration of the past; a call to action for the present and the future. It is reminder that our heritage is a living, breathing force that must be preserved, promoted and passed on to future generation.”
Mr. Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, the President of the Ghana Journalists Association encouraged the media to continuously educate and enlighten the populace about our heritage while assuring the GTA of his outfit’s maximum support during this period.
Guests were treated to some fine poetry brewed in an African pot by Ghanaian poet and writer Oswald Okaitei.
