Ghana Music Week Launched

Obour (Osei Kufour BiceThe first ever Ghana Music Week Festival was launched at the forecourt of the National Theater on March 4th 2013. The launch ceremony had in attendance, the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Arts, Mrs Elizabeth Ofosu-Agyare, Ex MUSIGA Presidents Alhaji Sidiku Buari and Diana Hopeson, Nene Nargai Kassa, aka Honorable Mike Gizo, Chief of Agomada, Prof. John Collins, current MUSIGA Bice Osei Kuffour and a number of prominent musicians including Rocky Dawuni and pat Thomas.
The Deputy Director of The National Theater, Mrs Amy Appiah Frimpong spoke about the collaboration between MUSIGA and the National Theater for the maiden Ghana Music Week Celebratin. She mentioned that it also coincided with the 20th anniversary celebration of the National Theater. She added that the Creative Sector indeed adds some contribution to the growth of the country and asked that the entire sector finds means of evaluating this addition.
In his speech, the MUSIGA President, Bice Osei Kuffour thanked all Stakeholders in the music industry for supporting the Ghana Music Week. He went on to talk about the various activities for the week, mentioning the Ghana Unity Concert, the seminars, the essay competition and the Ghana Music Honors Night and entreated all to be a part of the celebration.
There was a performance detailing the chronology of Ghanaian music from the pre independence era, through till now. Manifest did this performance much to the delight of the entire people present. He interspersed his delivery with some bits of drama as he spoke about the origins of Highlife, the influence of Hip Hop and the fusion of the two to bring forth Hiplife with all its diversions through to the current Azonto craze.
The President of the Republic of Ghana was represented by the Sector Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Mrs Ofosu-Agyare who commended MUSIGA for this celebration. She spoke about the research into the contribution of music to Ghana’s GDP which the Union is embarking on and added that Government will continue to support the Creative Arts and also promote domestic tourism.
The first ever Ghana Music Week celebration is being spearheaded by MUSIGA, the National Theater, Government of Ghana and the sector Ministry with sponsorship from Airtel, rLG and Smirnoff (Ice and Vodka).
