Direction of Airplay Contributing to the Decline in Highlife Music – Nana Acheampong

Ghanaian music legend Nana Acheampong has bemoaned the slump in highlife today, as compared to the early days of the genre.

According to the ‘Nanka Ebeye Den’ hitmaker, although musicians have always done their part, the onus is on disc jockeys (DJs) to give the genre which is the route of Ghana music quality play time.

He made this known on Wednesday in an exclusive interview on Big Family Radio’s ‘Bus Stop’ show hosted by Ogboro Naghty.

“We (musicians) have done our part but the DJs are playing other songs that make it difficult for listeners to listen to highlife music. So the direction of the airplay is a contributor to this,” he said.

When quizzed about how he sees the genre today , the ‘Champion Lover Boy’ noted that “we enjoyed music at our time but now there are changes. When stuffs change, I don’t get worried and never speak against it.”

“We have done our part, we are still doing it. Those who are now into it have different style but they are also doing their best,” he added.

He also mentioned that “the new crop of highlife acts are doing well. Music never expires — people go and people come; I enjoy listening to their songs. They should continue what they’re doing.”

Over two (2) decades ago, song distribution & marketing through hard copies (CDs and cassettes) was a big business in Ghana’s music industry. This saw the spring up of Frimprince, Agiecoat, Despite Stores, and many others.

As a result, his album ‘Nanka Ebeye Den’, sold over 10 million copies.

He also hinted that he is still working with Daddy Lumba around the clock to come out with a masterpiece for the fans.
