Maiden World Azonto Festival Launched In Style

Azonto FestivalThe maiden World Azonto Festival – an annual event to celebrate and award dancers while promoting tourism and other Ghanaian brands has been launched at a press meeting in Accra and in style.

The 2013 edition which marks the beginning of the biggest outdoor dance festival to be held in the country this year will also held in other countries around the globe with the United Kingdom being the next destination after Ghana.

The launch was held on Friday, May 31 at the Ayensu Hall of the Coconut Grove Regency Hotel at North-Ridge, Accra.

Organizers however acknowledged that it is the right point in time for this celebration – especially an era when there have been a lot of contentions over whether it is a dance or a song, where it originated from among other factors.

In an exclusive interview with the Chief Executive Officer of Flash Mob Ghana (FMG), he admitted “the dance must officially celebrated to make the world know the dance is of Ghanaian origin and also use the medium to promote other Ghanaian brands especially in the country’s tourism industry.” “We also need to organize this as Ghana’s dance festival since most countries do so to promote tourism,” he added.

They also admitted that the main celebration will be held in mid-September (during the 2nd week.) Prior to the three-day event, there will be awareness creation in some part of the Greater Accra, Eastern and Central regions where other minor events will be held.

A representative from the Ministry of Tourism expressed the ministry’s joy at joining hands with the organizers to celebrate this festival. There were also explanations on how the dance evolved, how it went viral about 3 years ago till now among others.

The press and other attendees at the launch were wowed with a creative and innovative conclusion where the azonto dance was fused with some of Ghana’s major dances and of course in style.
