Late Start takes Shine Off 3Music Awards 2019

Although the organisers of the 3Music Awards had promised to make sure this year’s edition will start on time, they couldn’t keep that promise.

The advertised time for the show, which came off on Saturday, March 30, at the Fantasy Dome, Trade Fair in Accra, was 8pm but it ended up starting at nearly 11pm and that took the shine off the highly anticipated awards show.

When the show started though it was an enjoyable one for patrons; last year, Dancehall artiste, Shatta Wale, could not perform because of time last year and this year he opened the event with a great act.

Young acts who are doing the most including Cina Soul, Tulenkey, Kofi Mole, Adina, Akwaboah, Dope Nation and La Meme Gang all gave the patrons a good time.

Medikal was on point on the night and he didn’t disappoint the patrons as he performed his smash hit, Omo Ada. He also performed other songs like Too Risky, Gimme Vibe and Wrowroho.

Although he did not win any award on the night and performed to almost empty seats, Samini showed maturity by putting up a wonderful performance.

When he got on stage at 3:30 am, virtually everyone was out of the auditorium but Samini still went ahead to thrill the few patrons that were left.

Just after dropping his first hit song Linda, he said, “I have no award and the place is empty but the few Samini fans will have the best of me”.

Samini performed songs like Obaa, My Own, Movement, Where My Baby Dey, Master Key among others.

Another artiste who also did very well was celebrated Reggae artiste, Rocky Dawuni. Although he also performed late and to just a few people, he put up a great show.

Dancehall artiste Shatta Wale won big on the night with eight awards. He picked up Fan Army of the Year, Reggae/ Dancehall Act of the Year, Digital Act of the Year, Reggae / Dancehall Song of the Year, Best Video, Viral song of the Year, Song of the Year and Man of the Year.

Stonebwoy also picked three awards on the night including Album of the Year, Afrobeats Song of the Year and Most Streamed Song on Boomplay.

The Bethel Revival Choir won the hearts of many by picking three awards on the night. The group won Gospel Song of the Year, Gospel Act of the Year and Group of the Year.

Veteran Gospel musician, Prof. Kofi Abraham was honoured with the Legendary Award. He stated that he has been doing music since 1970 and the award meant a lot to him.

Another veteran, Highlife musician, Obuoba J.A. Adofo, and music producer Mark Okraku Mantey also received Honorary awards.

The stage set up was wonderful and the emcees, Lexis Bill and Cookie were fantastic but the event would have been given that extra touch if most of the award winners had been present to receive their awards.
